Ask the Expert: Cabinet facelifts

Q: We want to give our tired-looking kitchen cabinets a quick and inexpensive facelift without starting all over. What are some affordable upgrades that provide immediate impact?

If you are happy with your current kitchen layout, but want it to look newer and more modern, refacing may be the way to go. That's when we toss all of the old doors and drawer fronts, apply new veneer to the face frames and finished ends, and put on new doors and drawer fronts. With this method you can change the wood species and color without ditching your existing cabinets. Add some exciting pulls or knobs. There are hundreds of door styles, woods and finishes that you can choose from. Another idea is to paint the cabinets, and then add new painted doors and drawer fronts. Couple that with a new solid surface or quartz countertop and your kitchen looks new and inviting with only a few days down time and at a fraction of the cost of a full-blown remodel!
